With successful marketing strategy to engage exclusively
in electronic communications products, the company
expects to gross NT$2.5 billion this year
Known
for its 'innovation,' 'vitality,' and 'excellence,'
Taicom Data System Co., Ltd. has been exclusively
devoted itself to the research and development and
manufacturing of electronic communications products,
ranking first in pair gain and No. 8 in modem production
at the press time. Last year, Taicom had revenue of
NT$1.8 billion. Owing to its successful global marketing
strategy and the successfully developed ISDN router,
the company is expected to set a record NT$2.5 billion
revenue this year while a 15% growth was registered
for the first quarter. After-tax earnings per share
could be around NT$2.50.
Taicom
President Chen Chia-yuan (see right photo by Shang
Chang-fa) expressed that Taicom was established in
1983 when it began to act as agent for foreign manufacturers
for sales of system products in domestic market. Meanwhile,
Taicom started its own integration of the system products.
That was the time when Taicom first got into the market
of the telecom industry. At the time, there were not
many domestic manufacturers of industrial modem and
that was where Taicom believed the business opportunity
lay. As a result, Taicom set up a research and development
department to begin development of modem for industrial
use. At the same time, Taicom became a supplier to
Chunghwa Telecom Co., concentrating primarily on the
domestic market. Additionally, Taicom researchers
began to develop pair gain and ISDN of the 128K range.
In
1992 and 1993, Internet was developed and Taicom began
to extend its operation overseas. Apart from industrial
modem, Taicom also was in the market for PC modem.
Confined by the small scale that the domestic market
offers, Taicom has begun to look at the international
market. The first move was to get a stronghold in
the ISDN territory for Taicom has been equipped with
data and voice technology. The strategy of internationalization
has enabled Taicom the opportunity to reach the markets
in Europe and Japan. In the process, Taicom was able
to make itself recognized by Morono, the third largest
communications firm in Japan that had placed a huge
ODM order with Taicom.
With
telecom liberalization looming at the door, integration
of telecom and Internet is bound to become the trend
in future. Experiences accumulated at Taicom have
made the company capable of integration. To meet the
development of Internet communication, Taicom plans
to focus on multi-layer telecom integration in this
wave of Internet revolution, primarily because it
possesses the integration ability of production and
technology and manufacturing of switches. Taicom positions
itself in the broadband Internet WAN area whose products
include PSTN router, ADSL router, WAN router, and
VoIP. Shipment of the products is scheduled in the
third quarter.
In
its core business, Taicom plans to concentrate on
integration of research and development technology.
Not only will it focus on the R&D of transmission
equipment, but will also on the R&D of Internet access
devices. Apart from its core business, Taicom has
spun off to invest in NQI, a USA company, in conjunction
with its Internet R&D Center set up in the Hsinchu
Science-based Park. The Center is in charge of development
of series of router products. At the press time, orders
for over 20,000 sets have been in the process and
by the year end total order quantity could reach the
level of some 80,000 sets. Since Taicom possesses
the core technology of router manufacturing, sales
of router presents the company a high gross profit
and the order for 80,000 sets will sure help Taiwan
in its earnings for this year.
Aggressive
development of new products and uninterrupted expansion
into new markets have been primarily attributable
to the rapid growth of Taicom. Taicom is confident
that it will be ranked among the top 200 at the dawn
of the new century.
